Experience world-class waterfowl hunting in the heart of the Pacific Flyway. From grain field layouts to boat blind hunts, we put you in position for limit bags of mallards, wigeon, and migrating geese. Whatcom County's premier waterfowl outfitter.
World-Class Hunting in the Pacific Flyway
Northwest Washington sits in the heart of the Pacific Flyway, making Whatcom County one of the premier waterfowl hunting destinations in the Pacific Northwest. From November through January, massive flights of ducks and geese migrate through our region, creating exceptional hunting opportunities for those who know where to be.
What Makes Our Waterfowl Hunting Special:
Prime Flyway Location: Whatcom County's unique geography creates a natural funnel for migrating waterfowl. Birds traveling south from Canada and Alaska concentrate in our agricultural areas, coastal marshes, and river systems. This isn't hunting where birds might show up. This is hunting where birds will show up.
Diverse Hunting Opportunities: We offer multiple hunt types to match conditions and your preferences:
- Classic grain field hunts for greenheads and wigeon
- Natural cover hunts along the Nooksack River system
- Field layouts for migrating Canada geese and ducks
Every hunt type produces. We match the hunt to current conditions and bird behavior.

Target Species: Northwest Washington offers incredible species diversity:
- Mallards: Classic greenheads, the bird every waterfowler wants
- Wigeon: Fast-flying, excellent eating, abundant in our fields
- Canada Geese: Large migrating flocks, exciting hunting
Professional Setups: We don't show up with a bag of decoys and hope for the best. Our hunts feature:
- Large, realistic decoy spreads (200+ birds for field hunts)
- Quality blinds (dry, comfortable, concealed)
- Expert calling (we speak their language)
- Prime locations secured through private land access
- Proper concealment and strategic positioning
Local Knowledge: We live here, scout constantly, and hunt throughout the season. We know:
- Where birds are feeding and roosting
- Flight patterns and timing
- Which fields are holding birds
- How weather affects bird movement
- When and where to be for success
This isn't casual waterfowl hunting. This is professional guiding focused on putting you in position for memorable hunts.
Multiple Hunt Styles for Varying Conditions
Pro Drift Guide Service offers diverse waterfowl hunting opportunities. We select hunt types based on current bird activity, weather conditions, and your preferences.
Grain Field Hunts:
Our most popular hunt type. Classic layout hunting over decoys in productive agricultural fields.
The Setup:
- Large decoy spreads (200-300+ decoys)
- Layout blinds for concealment and comfort
- Strategic positioning based on bird flight patterns
- Hunting over harvested grain fields where birds are feeding
Target Species:
- Mallards (greenheads are the primary target)
- Wigeon (abundant in Whatcom County fields)
- Pintails (when present)
- Occasional Canada geese
Why It Works: Ducks and geese need to feed daily. We position in fields where birds are actively feeding, creating high-percentage hunting. When conditions are right, action can be fast and furious with birds working decoys at close range.
Best For: Hunters seeking classic waterfowl hunting experience with mallards over decoys.
Natural Cover Hunts:
Traditional hunting from natural cover along river systems and wetlands.
The Setup:
- Hunting from natural vegetation along waterways
- Smaller, more intimate decoy spreads
- Concealment in natural cover (no layout blinds needed)
- Focus on birds using river corridors
Target Species:
- Mallards (using river systems)
- Occasional wigeon and gadwall
Location Focus: Nooksack River system and associated wetlands provide excellent natural cover hunting opportunities.
Why It Works: Not all ducks use agricultural fields. Many birds utilize river systems and wetlands, flying predictable routes. This style hunting offers beautiful settings and close encounters.
Best For: Hunters who appreciate traditional waterfowl hunting in natural settings.
Goose Hunts:
When Canada geese are migrating through Whatcom County, we offer specialized goose hunts.
The Setup:
- Large goose decoy spreads (dozens to hundreds of decoys)
- Layout blinds in feeding fields
- Expert calling (geese are vocal and responsive)
- Hunting where geese are actively feeding
Target Species:
- Canada geese (primary)
Why It Works: Migrating geese need to feed heavily. When large flocks are working our agricultural areas, hunting can be spectacular. Geese are intelligent and challenging, making successful hunts incredibly rewarding.
Best For: Hunters seeking the challenge and excitement of large bird hunting.
Choosing Your Hunt Type:
We select hunt types based on:
- Current bird activity and concentrations
- Weather conditions and forecast
- Time of season
- Your experience level and preferences
- Group size and dynamics
You're not locked into one style. We hunt where success is most likely based on current conditions.
Prime Time for Northwest Washington Waterfowl
Peak Season: November 7th through
End of January
Waterfowl hunting in Northwest Washington follows seasonal patterns as birds migrate and weather changes:
Early Season (November 7-30):
- Season opener brings fresh birds and excited hunters
- Resident ducks still abundant
- Early migrators arriving from north
- Typically milder weather
- Less hunting pressure as season begins
Prime Season (December 1-31):
- Peak migration periods
- Large flights of northern birds arriving
- Cold weather pushes birds south
- Best overall numbers and variety
- Consistent action throughout month
- Mallards, wigeon, and geese at peak numbers
Late Season (January 1-31):
- Hard-core hunting for dedicated waterfowlers
- Birds are educated but still present
- Cold weather concentrates birds in open water
- Fewer hunters means less pressure
- Late-season birds can provide excellent hunting for those willing to brave weather
Hunt Timing:
Legal Shooting Hours: One-half hour before sunrise until 1:00 PM daily
Why the Afternoon Cutoff: We don't hunt past 1:00 PM to give the birds time to rest back into our spots to provide quality hunts.
Typical Hunt Schedule:
- Meet 1-1.5 hours before legal shooting light
- Travel to hunt location
- Set decoys and prepare blinds (in darkness)
- Hunt from legal shooting time through mid-morning or bag limits
- Usually off the field by late morning or noon
Best Conditions:
Weather: Overcast, light wind, cool temperatures typically produce best hunting. Geese especially love cloudy days. Clear, calm bluebird days can be slow.
Wind: Light to moderate wind (5-15 mph) is ideal. Too calm and birds can be difficult to decoy. Too windy and birds fly erratically.
Temperature: Cold fronts and dropping temperatures push birds south and increase feeding activity.
Moon Phase: Full moon periods can affect morning flights as birds feed at night.
Your Pro Drift guide monitors conditions constantly and adjusts strategies for success.

Common Questions About Waterfowl Hunting
What's the best time to book a waterfowl hunt?
December typically offers the best overall hunting due to peak migration timing and cold weather pushing birds south. However, excellent hunting occurs throughout the season. Early November is great for less-pressured birds and wood ducks. Late January offers hard-core hunting for dedicated waterfowlers with fewer hunters in the field.
Do I need experience to waterfowl hunt?
No experience necessary! We welcome first-time waterfowl hunters and provide all needed instruction. We teach shotgun safety, how to shoot flying birds, calling basics, and proper blind etiquette. Many first-timers have successful hunts and become lifelong waterfowlers.
What shotgun should I bring?
A 12-gauge or 20-gauge shotgun is recommended. Pump action or semi-automatic work well. You must use non-toxic shot (steel, bismuth, or tungsten). We provide shells, but you're welcome to bring your own if you have preferred loads. Your shotgun must be plugged to hold no more than 3 shells total.
What are my chances of limiting out?
Success varies with weather, migration timing, and hunting pressure. During prime conditions (cold weather, fresh flights of birds, good calling), limits are definitely possible. Some hunts see heavy action with numerous opportunities, while others are slower. We position you for best success based on current conditions.
What species will we hunt?
This depends on season timing and your preferences. Mallards and wigeon are primary targets in field hunts. Geese are hunted when large flocks are present. We focus on whatever species are most active.
Can I keep the ducks and geese I harvest?
Yes! All legally harvested waterfowl are yours to keep. Washington daily bag limits vary by species but typically allow 7 ducks per day with species-specific limits. Goose limits are typically 3-4 birds per day. We'll explain all regulations and help with proper identification.
How cold will it be?
November through January means cold weather is likely, especially during pre-dawn setup. Temperatures typically range from 20-45°F. Wind chill can make it feel colder. Proper layering is essential. Some of the best hunting occurs during the coldest weather when birds are actively feeding.
What if weather is really bad on my hunt day?
We hunt in rain, cold, and wind (waterfowl often fly best in poor weather). However, if conditions are genuinely unsafe (ice, extreme cold, dangerous wind), we'll reschedule. Most weather that seems "bad" to non-waterfowlers is actually ideal hunting weather.
Where exactly do we hunt?
We maintain multiple hunting locations throughout Whatcom County on private agricultural land and waterways. Specific locations vary based on scouting results and where birds are currently active. We don't publicize exact locations to preserve access and protect landowner relationships.
How early do we need to meet?
Very early! We typically meet 1.5 hours before legal shooting light (which is one-half hour before sunrise). This allows time to travel to location, set decoys, and be ready when shooting light arrives. Expect 4:00-5:00 AM meet times depending on season.
Do I need a duck stamp?
Yes! You need a valid Washington waterfowl hunting license plus federal and state duck stamps. These must be purchased before your hunt. We do not provide licenses or stamps. We can advise where to purchase if needed.
Can kids hunt?
Absolutely! Waterfowl hunting is excellent for kids. Washington requires hunters to be at least 10 years old and have completed hunter education (or hunt with licensed adult). We're experienced with young hunters and make hunts fun and educational. The excitement of ducks working decoys hooks kids on hunting.
What about dogs?
We do not allow clients to bring their own dogs.
How do I book a waterfowl hunt?
Contact us by phone or email to check availability and reserve dates. December books earliest due to peak season popularity. We recommend booking as early as possible for prime dates. Deposit required to secure reservation.
